Refugee Support
Empower seeks to provide the wraparound of community support and practical aid needed for them to start a new life.
Empower also provides support to refugees and asylum seekers in our community. Understanding that these are typically families and individuals who have fled their country of origin in dangerous or traumatic circumstances, Empower seeks to provide the wraparound of community support and practical aid needed for them to start a new life.
By partnering with different organisations, Empower has had the opportunity to assist many families who have fled from war and persecution in the Middle East. One such organization works on the ground in Syria and Iraq, helping families escape from extreme danger and facilitating the resettlement process.
Refugees referred to Empower often arrive in Australia with very few possessions and no support network. Shortly after their arrival, the Empower team visits these families and individuals to welcome them and ensure that they have access to the basic needs of shelter, food and clothing. Refugees are also introduced to local families who volunteer their time to participate in recreational activities together, providing relational connection and emotional support.
Accessing work is one of the greatest challenges for refugees and asylum seekers. As such, a central part of the Empower Refugee Support Program is empowering refugees to obtain stable employment by providing English lessons and vocational training and development.
The Empower team understands that it takes time and ongoing support to help refugees locate suitable homes, access education, receive health care and find employment. The process of building a new life in a foreign country is time-consuming and complex but Empower is committed to facilitating this end.
